Years ago, I found myself at an unmarked rural crossroads in a country that was new to me. There was no way to know which road I should take. After a while, I felt a sort of pull to the left, which eventually got me to where I needed to be. (Spoiler: not my original destination)
The reason I mention this is because it mirrors the way I paint. I never ‘plan ahead’ what I’m going to do. (Well, sometimes I do, but that usually doesn’t end well.) Each brushstroke or fingerful of paint or sweeping gesture of the palette knife leads me to the next, in some mysterious alchemical way that I don’t really understand.
Often, I compare my creative process to having a casual conversation with another person. In that scenario, none of us plan out what we’re going to say before we speak. We respond spontaneously, in the moment, to what’s been said. And that’s how I paint.
When the flow of movement of paint to canvas stops, and I don’t ‘know’ what to do anymore, I pause and listen to what my body is telling me. If the last thing I did was ‘off’, my belly starts to feel weird, maybe even a bit scared. That’s always the signal to put the brush down and make a nice cup of tea! It can take me a while to ‘know’ what the next move on a painting is… but the answer always comes.
It’s taken me a long time to really trust that.
